Songs of the Soul
During this series, “Songs of The Soul” we are going to read through the Psalms as a church community, utilizing the S.O.A.P. bible reading and journaling method. We invite you to join us over the next eight weeks as we become more intentional about bible reading and reflection.
Below is a description of the S.O.A.P method and a schedule of the reading plan.
S.O.A.P. BIBLE READING & JOURNALING
S.O.A.P. is one of the simplest methods of Bible reading and journaling. It stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It can be used with any daily Bible reading plan.
Scripture - Open your Bible to the day’s selection from Song of the Soul Bible Reading Plan. Read the passage slowly, thoughtfully, and a couple of times all the way through. Write out the verse(s) that spoke to you most in a journal or simple composition notebook.
Observation - To get the most out of the observation phase of your reading, ask the following questions: Who, what, where, when, why and how? For example, who is the author of the passage and to whom is it addressed? Where and when did the events take place? What struck you and caught your attention in what you read? You are simply looking for what the passage says, and what you think it means.
Application - Personalize what you have read by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Perhaps it is an instruction, encouragement, revelation of a new promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life. Ask yourself the following questions: What action do I need to take? What attitude do I need to change? What sin do I need to confess, ask forgiveness for, and repent of? Write down how this passage can apply to you today.
Prayer - This can be as simple as asking God to help you apply this passage to your life today. Or it may be asking God to give you greater insight on what he may be revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God might be saying to you. Write down insights you received for further reflection.
May you draw near to Jesus as you read the Psalms.
May you find abiding peace in his faithful presence.
