As a loving husband, devoted father to his girls and active member of his growth group and church community, Chris Adair marvels at how far his life has come. In his past life, addiction to pornography was leading him on a path to destruction. He was chained to a roller coaster of secrets, lies and guilt that offered no hope, no freedom and no way out. He remembers that at his lowest moments he felt completely trapped by his sin and totally worthless as a man, husband and father because of it. Not only was his addiction completely controlling his life, but the shame that came with it was paralyzing.
“In my own mind, I labeled myself as weak. Labeled myself as not worthwhile. Self-centered. Stuck.”
It wasn’t until a friend invited their family to EastLake Church one Easter Sunday where Chris felt the strength to ask God for help. In Chris’ own words: “to surrender this sin to God.” What came next? Freedom. He admits it wasn’t an easy road. It took courage, perseverance and faith. It also required the outside help from counselors, friends, growth groups and Celebrate Recovery for Chris and his family to walk out of the bonds of his addiction. While Chris doesn’t want to minimize the severity of his sin or the consequences of his choices, he is adamant that his families’ unity, his own personal growth and his faith in God’s unwavering love now define his life and prove that God can work in the most ugly and desperate circumstances.
“I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, I know, just like I know the sun’s going to come up tomorrow, that God never gives up on me.”
Chris is now an active member and leader in Celebrate Recovery, Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-Centered 12 step program designed to help those struggling with hurts, hang-ups, and habits by showing them the loving power of Jesus Christ through the recovery process.
