Shining Through The Shrinking

Read: “You are like that illuminating light. Let your light shine everywhere you go, that you may illumine creation, so men and women everywhere may see your good actions, may see creation at its fullest, may see your devotion to Me, and may turn and praise your Father in heaven because of it.” Matthew 5:16 (VOICE)

Reflect: Significant health issues have caused my world to shrink. I don’t work, my kids are grown and out of school, and some days I don’t feel well enough to get together with friends or even go for a walk around the neighborhood.

A few years ago, I was looking at my life and wondering how I could love others the way Jesus asks us to love when I was so limited by my health. I was used to being the one who jumped in to serve, and now my weeks were full of appointments to manage my health. How could I make an impact in God’s kingdom if I wasn’t able to do much of anything?

But here’s the beautiful thing – God’s light can shine through me even with my limitations. I don’t manufacture his light, he does. It’s not dependent on my energy, skill set, or abilities. I shine God’s light best when I am filled with his love because I spend time with him. Then I can be intentional about sharing it. So now I see my care providers, their office staff, and fellow patients as part of my community. I’m intentional about being open to conversations with people who are in my path. I encourage, listen, love and care about them even while I’m managing my health.

React: God wants us to love the people he’s surrounded us with. That’s what it really means to bless the people where you live, work and play. Who are you in relationship with? Who are the people surrounding you? What changes do you need to make in the way you approach your day-to-day life so that others see God through you?

Pray: God, thank you for never being limited by our limitations. Thank you for loving us so well and helping us learn to share your love with those who surround us.
