Community Partnerships & Outreach This Week

It’s been incredible to see how many of you have stepped up to #BeTheChurch in our community through this season! Even the smallest effort can make a huge impact in the lives of others. Check out what your service and generosity has done this week:
  • Through your generosity and in partnership with Community Through Hope, we were able to add an additional food distribution site in Imperial Beach and at Community Through Hope next week. If you are healthy and would like to volunteer to help with preparing food packages or distribution, you can sign up here.
  • Venice Church members reached out to their elderly neighbors to help with everything from mowing their lawn to volunteering at the local food bank.
  • Imperial Beach Church attendees were able to provide formula and supplies for seven babies at Grace Children’s Home in Mexico.  (Not to mention the brand new food distribution site we mentioned above!)
  • Torrey Pines Church delivered and transported ten loads of groceries, baby supplies and toiletries to families around San Diego.
  • Adult ministry staff and volunteers called 300 senior citizens of EastLake Church Chula Vista to check in and see how they were doing, and also delivered fresh vegetables and canned goods to those in need.
  • EastLake Church Paradise Village has set up a “Dial In Sunday Service” where their members can call on Sunday morning at 9:30am to hear a short encouraging message.
This is just a small listing of everything you’re doing to be faithful in prayer, faithful in service, and faithful in generosity!

Prayer Guide - Week 2

Update: March 20, 2020

Let's #BETHECHURCH!

Over the past week, so many aspects of our lives have been altered, interrupted, and changed. In the midst of so much uncertainty, it is easy to slip into worry and fear. But we know that God has a plan in the middle of it all, and His plan is good! For so many of us, this week has been defined by being told all the things we can’t do right now, but we want to take a moment to share with you all of the things you CAN do!

As of this week, we’re establishing a new weekly rhythm and schedule of activities and events that you and your family can participate in to keep growing in faith, worship, and community. All of these opportunities and resources are accessible from your phone, tablet, or computer.

Resources for Every Day of the Week

Community Partnerships & Outreach This  Week

Throughout this week, our EastLake Church Network family has spent countless hours serving our communities and being the church! Here are just a few of the ways we have served and seen your generosity at work:

  • Through your generosity, we have made a substantial donation to Community Through Hope to expand food distribution efforts for those in need. This week alone, they were able to provide 6,313 people with 59,256 pounds of food and 822 families received diapers for children.
  • Also with Community Through Hope, we joined Community Congregational Church in funding a mobile shower unit for the streetbound and homeless, providing critical hygiene resources for those at risk and in need.
  • We made a substantial donation to Powerhouse Ministries, who provide support and transitional housing to men in recovery, many of whom have been disproportionately impacted by sudden layoffs in the restaurant and service industry.
  • We committed thousands of dollars to Big Table, which provides assistance and immediate financial support to workers in the hospitality and food service industry, which has been devastated by shutdowns and cancellations in light of COVID-19.
  • People who serve in our Hand Over Hand ministry that assists families with children who have special needs dropped off groceries, supplies, and dinner to some of the families who have immunocompromised children at home.
  • A member of Imperial Beach Church delivered hand sanitizers, disinfectant spray, baby wipes, baby clothes, and other needs to the women at the Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition, our long-standing partner in the battle against human trafficking.
  • Members of Venice Church served at information hotlines and community organizations to help get information out to people in need.

The amazing part is that this list is only part of all the good work that the people of our church network are doing – either individually or collectively. It’s all part of our ongoing goal to be the church by remaining FAITHFUL IN PRAYER, FAITHFUL IN SERVICE, and FAITHFUL IN GENEROSITY.

Growth Groups

When we hear “social distance”, we think of “physical distance”. In seasons like this, we need each other more than ever. We need connection and we need contact. This is a time to lean into one another — not to socially isolate. If you are in an EastLake Group, we are encouraging all groups to go virtual!

If you aren’t connected to a group but are looking to connect, consider hosting a 6-week virtual growth group. You get to pick the day and time of your group, and we will train you through the process.

Kids... We Are Here For You!

We are missing your kids but they don’t have to miss us! Your entire family can experience the same worship and teaching they experience every week in Eastlake Kids Ministry through the Parent Cue appDownload it today and experience as a family a deeper faith navigating through current challenges.

For even more interactive elements, devotions, fun activities and even personal parenting encouragement, follow the Eastlake Kids Ministry on Instagram and Facebook. Make sure to tag us in your photos while you disciple your children at home!

EastLake Students - New YouTube Channel

EastLake Student Ministry (Middle School and High School) has taken over a new YouTube channel with great new content every Wednesday, Saturday, and Monday! They launched this Wednesday and they had over 350 students watch the video. Be sure to tune in every Wednesday at 7pm by going to bit.ly/elsmyoutube. Be sure to follow their Facebook page and Instagram (MS / HS) to stay up to date on the latest during this season in Student Ministry!

Update: March 14, 2020

Being THe CHurch

The EastLake Church Network has always been about people helping people find and follow Jesus. And in this present moment of global fear and anxiety, we have an opportunity to live out this mission even more concretely. Here are three ways you can bring the hope of Jesus to our local communities.

Be Faithful in Prayer

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

We have created a downloadable Prayer Guide.

Be Faithful in Service

You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. ~ Matthew 5:14,16

Here are some ways you can serve one another:

  • Connect with family, friends, and neighbors regularly to offer words of love and encouragement. Pray with and for them.
  • Share a meal with someone who feels isolated.
  • Check in on elderly friends and neighbors. Offer to get them groceries.
  • Offer respite for caregivers of elderly individuals or those with special needs
  • Offer free childcare to parents who have to continue to work outside the home.
  • Pay for groceries or a meal for a family in need.
  • Walk your neighbor’s dog.
  • Show kindness, practice patience, and give grace.

SIGN-UP TO HELP

Be Faithful in Generosity

You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. ~ 2 Corinthians 9:11

Generosity is a very practical way you can help the EastLake Church Network through this season. Your regular giving in our church changes lives and empowers us to continue to share the hope of Jesus in the midst of an uncertain and fearful world. We are asking all of us who call this church home to continue generously giving, and to set up recurring giving. Your regular giving helps us anticipate and meet the unexpected needs of the communities we serve during this time of crisis.

Here’s how you can set up recurring giving:

You may still give personally by regularly mailing a check to EastLake Church Network – ATTN Finance Dept., 990 Lane Ave., Chula Vista, CA 91914, or dropping by your local church office.

Thank you for being the Church with us.

You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. ~ 1 Peter 2:9

A Video Message from Pastor James

A Letter from Pastor James

Hello everyone,

As you are all already aware, there has been a great deal of attention to and concern regarding the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in our nation and our world.  Throughout this process, our church leaders have been closely monitoring events and staying up to date with recommendations and advisories from local, state, and federal authorities.

Out of an abundance of care for our communities, we are temporarily moving to an online-only service experience beginning this weekend.  This was a very difficult decision, but we did so to honor our governing officials who have urged extreme caution and to love our neighbors, many of whom are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19.

Notice that we didn’t say we are “canceling church” or “canceling services”.  That may seem subtle, but we believe this is very important. The only way to “cancel” the church would be for us all to renounce Christ and stop following Him, because the church is not a place or a service. The church is people who believe in Jesus and live and love like He does.  And right now, our world needs what Jesus brings more than ever.

At the end of our services, you may have heard us say, “We’re done being the church in here, now go be the church out there.”  And you know what?  We mean it.  In the middle of everything going on in our world, we have a tremendous opportunity to bring the hope, the peace, and the love of Christ everywhere we go.  Simply stated: There has never been a better time to BE the church.

In an effort to be proactive, here are three ways that we – the EastLake Church Network – are going to be the church during this time:

  1. We will be faithful in prayer.  We believe that prayer changes things, so we will pray for medical professionals, government leaders, those who are currently sick, those who are at risk, and those who are in fear.  We also pray that the church would be unified and shine the light of Christ during this dark and difficult time.
  2. We will be faithful in service.  Throughout history, this has always been one of the defining characteristics of Jesus’ people.  Whether it was caring for the sick during plagues, establishing the first hospitals, or caring for orphans, Jesus’ followers have always led with service.
  3. We will be faithful in generosity.  When fear and anxiety rule, we tend to turn inward and have a “me first” mentality.  However, our calling as a church is to be generous in all things. As my friend Carey Nieuwhof said, “the early church wasn’t known for stockpiling ample food and supplies for themselves and spreading fear on social media.”

Let’s all embrace the truth of 2 Timothy 1:7, which says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  Now is the time to choose faith over fear, prayer over panic, wisdom over worry, and service over selfishness.

Within the next 24 hours, you’ll be receiving specific details about our online-only services for each of our locations.  (Just to be clear: This means that we will not gather in person at any of our locations this weekend.)  All of the information you need regarding your location will be available via email, social media, your church’s website, and the EastLake Church Network app.

There is always Kingdom of God opportunity in every crisis.  I look forward to seeing how God will use us to be the church where we live, work, and play.

Prayerfully,

James Grogan
Lead Pastor, EastLake Church Network
